Time to make some very practical magic.
In astrology, the moon represents our emotions and subconscious — the stuff that’s operating underneath the surface. The moon speaks to how we get our needs met and how we feel safe or nurtured. The moon controls the changing tides of the ocean, so it’s no surprise that the moon is at home in the watery sign of Cancer. Cancer season takes place right at the start of summer, when the days are long and bright, the fruit on the trees is ripe and bountiful, and friends are down to get together and barbecue almost every weekend. When the moon is hanging out in Cancer (which happens every 28 days or so) she’s comfortable, she gets all her needs met; everything is provided for her there. Cancer embodies vulnerability, creativity, and changeability — and the moon is here for it!
However, this week’s full moon is in Capricorn, the sign directly opposite Cancer. When the moon is in Capricorn, she couldn’t be farther from home. (Last month, we explored the the meaning of polar signs more thoroughly here.) Capricorn season occurs at the start of winter when the nights are long and cold, the land is frozen and barren, and everyone just wants to hibernate and stay home. Capricorn is a sign characterized by responsibility, authority, and hard work. Capricorn can feel rather harsh and restrictive to the moon, who prefers warmth and coziness. A full moon in Capricorn always has the potential to feel less than snuggly.
Full moons are always a time of peak illumination, when our deepest feelings are spot lit and on full display.
It’s a moment when our subconscious inner world becomes clearer, both to ourselves and, likely, to others. Full moons have a reputation for evoking heightened emotions because they reveal something — something that we may purposely hide or bury within ourselves. That kind of spotlight on our emotions can feel really vulnerable and tense. So to relieve that tension, full moons are always used for releasing what is no longer serves us.
When the full moon is in Capricorn, the themes of this particular zodiac sign get highlighted:
Capricorn is an earth sign — The urge to create something solid and material is heightened.
Capricorn is a cardinal sign — There’s a greater drive to ignite action and set things in motion.
Capricorn is the Seagoat — It’s a mythical creature, half goat and half fish. Goats scale towering mountains with resilience, while fish navigate spiritual waters adeptly. This fusion symbolizes Capricorn's ability to pragmatically serve a higher purpose.
Capricorn is ruled by Saturn — Think of Saturn as the solar system's strict dad. Saturn is the planet of structure, discipline, and maturity. Saturn, the planet of cold reality and mortality, instills an awareness of time's finite nature, urging us to use it wisely. Saturn isn’t just a total jerk for the hell of it, it restricts and constricts so that we focus our energy on building something stable and secure. Saturn is only interested in creating something that is going to last for a long time.
Saturn urges us to embrace the authority of our life experiences, standing firm in what we know to be true. With time and age, wisdom blossoms under Saturn’s influence. During this full moon, we can draw upon this wisdom to make prudent decisions about where we invest our efforts and what truly deserves our time.
This full moon is happening in close connection to Pluto.
Pluto is the Roman God of the Underworld, the equivalent to the Greek God, Hades. Pluto also has a strong association with the Hindu deity, Kali, Goddess of creation and destruction. Pluto is akin to compost — breakdown and rot for the sake of creating fertile ground. This Sunday’s full moon brings us the energy to burn down whatever needs to be kicked to the curb, so that we can rise from the ashes like that big ol’ beautiful phoenix.
With the full moon taking place so close to Pluto, we can anticipate an added layer of emotional intensity and catharsis. Pluto seeks healing at any cost, excavating and dredging up everything so that it can be investigated and understood. Pluto intensifies everything it touches, so we can expect this full moon to bring hidden depths to the surface. It’s a moment ripe for transformation, challenging us to discern which of our coping mechanisms are outdated and need reconstruction. The full moon urges us to uncover and integrate our shadows, so we can tap into our own wholeness.
The full moon in Capricorn is a moment to let go of any emotional habit or pattern that is keeping you from being the authority in your own life.
With the full moon in Capricorn, you’re being given an opportunity to cultivate emotional maturity. It’s a time to let go of fear and embrace your own agency — to transcend apprehension so that you can forge sustainable plans toward achieving your goals. With Pluto's close involvement in this peak lunar phase, we have the opportunity to compost old coping mechanisms, creating fertile ground to grow new, supportive mental and emotional habits. The full moon in Capricorn asks you to get real about how your going to scale the mountains you want to summit, without burning yourself out!
